ERICKSON AND RAO GIVE
COLGATE DOUBLES TITLE AT PATRIOT LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS WEST POINT, N.Y. -- American and Army captured three individual titles each at the 2002 Patriot League Women's Flighted Tennis Championship held at the United States Military Academy. The Eagles claimed two singles titles and one doubles crown, while the Black Knights fourth and fifth singles and second doubles. AU junior Katarina Kollarova, who was the No. 1 seed, claimed the first singles crown with a three-set victory over second-seeded Kristen Nowicki of Lehigh. Kollarova dropped the opening set 6-3, but rebounded to win the next two sets, 6-1, 7-6 (4). In second singles play, Bucknell's Veronica Brown posted her second-straight win over a seeded opponent when she took down second-seeded Annie Collier of Army, 6-3, 7-5. American's Olga Mikhailova, who was the first singles champion in 2001, won her second-straight PL flighted title with a three-set victory over top-seeded Megan Noble of Army. Mikhailova posted a 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-1 victory. Army's Amanda Paluch took home a first-place finish in fourth singles with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over American's Ashley Retley. Rounding out the list of singles winners are Army's Cristina Lucin and Lehigh's Kristin Mulstay. In the fifth singles championship match, Lucin upset top-seeded Rheanna Gaskin of Bucknell, 6-2, 6-1, while Mulstay claimed the sixth singles crown with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over Lyndsey Nott of Army. American, Army and Bucknell each produced winners in the three doubles brackets. In first doubles play, American's Kristina Georgieva and Kollarova defeated Lehigh's Maria del Carmen Angora and Nowicki in the championship match, 8-4. Georgieva and Kollarova punched their ticket to the final with a 9-8 (0) victory over Army's Annie Collier and Megan Noble, while Angora and Nowicki defeated Lindsay Suffredini and Emily Wenink of Colgate, 9-8 (5). The second doubles final saw Army's Lucin and Marissa Limsiaco top Lehigh's Mulstay and Jamie Fass, 8-1. The Black Knight partners made it to the championship match with an 8-1 victory over American's Mikhailova and Ashley Retley. Mulstay and Fass outlasted Bucknell's Nadezda Cucic and Ashley Diers 8-6 in the semifinals. The final doubles match pitted Bucknell's Tanya Sichko and Jill Wurzburg against Colgate's Lauren Erikson and Sheila Rao. CU's pair came out on top in the third doubles final, 8-1. Sichko and Wurzburg earned a spot in the final with an 8-6 win over Melanie Bundoc and Amanda Paluch of Army earlier in the day.
