Women's Tennis Finishes Strong in St.
Bonaventure September 30, 2001 St. Bonaventure, N.Y. - The Raider women's tennis squad finished its near perfect weekend in tournament play. By winning five of six singles flights and all three doubles flights, Colgate's tennis team simply outperformed the competition. In this first weekend of the fall season, the team was led by first-years Marissa Alikpala and Jamie Maldow. Alikpala looked sharp in winning the number one singles flight by downing Milena Matijevic of Niagara in straight sets. Jamie Maldow was victorious in her third flight singles championship, dropping only three total games. The Raiders finished the weekend with an outstanding 19-1 overall record in singles play. The Raiders also extended their dominance into doubles competition, winning all three flights handily. Veterans Lindsay Suffredini and Emily Wenink downed tough competition from St. Bonaventure to capture the first singles crown. Again Maldow, teamed with Jessica Fede, edged by Amy Linda and Erin Monaco of Binghamton University in the third doubles flight. Marissa Alikpala and Lindsey Sine breezed by Jen Wong and Michaela Kollarova 8-1 to win the second doubles division. Overall, Colgate received excellent performances from all its young stars. Amazingly, the Raiders were able to complete this performance without captain Lauren Erikson or star Lorraine Coulter, who did not participate in the tournament. With the addition of new first-year stalwarts Marissa Alikpala, Jamie Maldow, and Amirah Agha Shahid, the Raiders have certainly bolstered their chances against any competition. The women's tennis team resumes its season October 13th at Central Connecticut. Singles
