Colgate Squeezes Past UMASS 4-3

Febuary 17, 2002

HAMILTON, NY. - The Raiders improve their spring season mark to 5-3 by edging visitor UMASS on Sunday.  The team has been on a tear lately, winning 5 of its last 6 matches as it prepares to face its first Patriot League competition of the spring next weekend (Bucknell).

Colgate fell behind early by losing the doubles point.  However, the duo of Lauren Erikson and Lindsey Sine improve to an outstanding 7-0 by trouncing Ashley Smith and Allison Hagenbuch 8-2.  Helena Horak and Susan Hyams of UMASS slipped past the freshman team of Marissa Alikpala and Jamie Maldow.  The match was decided by a score of 9-7 in the tiebreaker.

Thus, Colgate emerged victorious in 4 of the 6 singles matches to earn the win.  At the number 3 through 6 spots, the Raiders simply overpowered UMASS, winning all four matches in straight sets.  Huge performances were again turned in by Jessica Fede and Ali Grabler at 5 and 6 respectively.  Since cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 thumping, Fede improved her team-best singles record to 13-3.  Meanwhile, freshman newcomer Grabler, in the deciding match, smothered Ashley Smith 6-2, 6-3.  Grabler lost a total of 9 games in both of her matches combined on the weekend.

The Raiders continue their season Friday, February 22nd, against Binghamton at 5:00pm.
