Colgate Battles Syracuse Tough in Loss January 30, 2002 Hamilton, NY. In its second Division I match of the spring season, the women's tennis team fought rival Syracuse to a 5-2 loss. The defeat dropped the Raider's spring record to 0-2 overall (0-0 Patriot League). Colgate took the early lead by earning the doubles point, winning two of the three matches. The duo of Lauren Erikson and Lindsey Sine won a tough match that went into extra games, 9-7. The match went back and forth until the home team Raiders finally seized control. Also highlighting the squad's doubles success was the tandem of Jessica Fede and Jamie Maldow. Maldow's addition to this young team is certainly making an immediate impact. She helped her partner seal their 8-3 triumph. Despite the Orangemen's elevated level of play, Colgate was able to match their intensity. Leading the way for the Raiders in singles play was sophomore Jessica Fede, who answered her opponents' rallies before emerging victorious 6-4, 6-3. Fede's powerful serve along with her excellent cross-court placement was crucial to her win. Lauren Erikson battled back in her second set to challenge number one singles player Masha Kabanova before falling 6-3. In addition, Emily Wenink fought hard for the Raiders, but was edged out, 6-4, 6-4. In general, the competition was closer than most of the scores suggest. The Raiders continue their season Friday, February 1st, at Albany at 4:00pm. SINGLES |
