COLGATE POSTS TOUGH 2-1 WIN AGAINST USM

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Colgate women's ice hockey senior Charlotte Davet recorded the game-winning goal in the Red Raiders 2-1 victory against Southern Maine in ECAC Division III action Jan. 22.

Leading Colgate scorer Heather Murphy gathered a loose puck on the right side boards and found Davet skating down the middle of the ice and she struck the puck past USM goaltender Sam Whitman at the 12:53 mark of the second period.

Colgate wasted little time in taking the lead in the contest as Jenn O'Brien recorded a marker just 40 seconds into the game on a feed from Kelly Roos. Roos found O'Brien on the doorstep to the left of USM's Whitman and O'Brien struck top shelf on the right side.

Southern Maine was able to even the score when Amy Matueweski scored the equalizer with a power-play goal at the 17:20 mark of the first period. Holly Manning and Kim Law recorded helpers on Matueweski's goal.

The Red Raiders were able to stave off a short five-on-three Southern Maine power-play opportunity and then the remainder of the one-man advantage in the final four minutes of the second period to hold a narrow 2-1 lead.

Both teams combined for nine penalties, six for the Red Raiders and three for Southern Maine. Colgate was 0-for-2 on the power-play, while USM was 1-for-5.

The Huskies pulled their goaltender for the final 1:06 of regulation, but weren't able to register ant serious chances as Colgate goaltender Jen Butraw held on to stop 20 shots in the game. USM's Whitman stopped 16 shots on the day.
