COLGATE DESTROYS DIVISION III FOE UNION, 8-1
Contact: Mike Zimmerman It took ten minutes to get going, but then Colgate barraged the net scoring four goals in the first period. Maura Kehoe started the scoring at 10:09 with an unassisted, power play goal on a rebound of her own shot. The Raiders went up 2-0 just a minute and a half later when Shelby Nelson netted a slap shot from the wing for her first goal of the season. Nicole Lehrhoff tallied her first assist of the year on the goal. At 15:05, Kristy MacDonald lit the lamp for the second time this season on a rebound chance. Kristin Cirbus was credited with the assist and Colgate led 3-0. Nelson struck again with 22 seconds left in the period. She skated the length of the ice and netted her second goal of the game, giving the Raiders a 4-0 advantage at the end of one period. The second period saw Colgate register 23 shots on goal and have many opportunities but could not capitalize and was held scoreless in the period. Union notched its first goal of the game at 13:36 when Courtney Riepenhoff scored off assists from Jamie Laubisch and Meg Lloyd, to pull Union back to 4-1. Colgate added insurance in the third period scoring four additional goals. MacDonald netted her second of the season at 2:20 off assists from Caitlin Hornyak and Cirbus. Colgate made it 6-1 at 4:10 of the third when Cheryl Setchell netted a goal from Carly McNaughton and Chelsey Rhodes. The special teams went to work for Colgate late in the third as the Raiders added a short-handed goal from Allison Paiano to go up 7-1, and a power play goal at 17:39 by Cirbus. Paiano and Hornyak were credited with the assists to set the final at 8-1. Colgate outshot Union 44-16 and killed all six power play advantages held by Union. The Raiders went 2-5 on the power play. Rebecca Lahar made 15 saves and upped her record to 6-7 on the season. Colgate is now 8-7 and above .500 for the first time since it was 1-0. Union is now 5-5-1 on the campaign. The Raiders will now break for finals and the Christmas holiday. They will be back in action at Utica on January 3 for a 2 p.m. face-off.
