WOMEN'S HOCKEY GIVES UP FIVE THIRD PERIOD GOALS AS MAINE SKATES AWAY WITH
A 5-1 WIN AND THE WEEKEND SWEEP October 21, 2001 Contact: Michele Kelley Office: (315) 228-7602 Fax: (315) 228-7977 Email: mlkelley@mail.colgate.edu HAMILTON, N.Y. – Maine sophomore Meagan Aarts (Watford, Ont.) tallied two goals, including the game-winner, as the Black Bears skated past Colgate for the weekend sweep, winning Sunday's game 5-1. All six goals were scored in the third period, as Raider rookie goaltender Lindsay Bourne (Redlands, Calif.) was outstanding between the pipes through two periods. Bourne recorded 25 saves through 40 minutes, including an incredible stick save on the doorstep with 4:30 remaining in the second. Maine's Jarin Sjogren (Bengough, Sask.) deked and had a wide-open net, but a diving Bourne kept the score tied at 0-0. Black Bear defenseman LeeAnne Irwin (Freeport, N.Y.) broke the game open 3:31 into the last stanza, when she buried a shot fed by freshman Cheryl White (Portage la Prairie, Manitoba). Aarts scored the eventual game-winner at 7:54, with Tracy Caridade (Sudbury, Ont.) adding Maine's third goal less than three minutes later. Colgate freshman Amanda Barre (Grafton, Ont.) robbed Maine senior goalie Amanda Cronin (York, Maine) of the shutout when she banged home her own rebound for an unassisted goal with less than 10 minutes to play. The Black Bears dominated the shooting game, 35-16, with half of the Raiders' shots coming in the third period. Bourne's exceptional two-period performance in her first collegiate start was the only reason that Maine did not score before the last stanza, as Colgate was out-shot 25-8 through two. Cronin made 15 saves to give Maine its second win of the season. The Raiders will play at Quinnipiac on October 26 and 27 in hopes of improving their 0-2-0 record. Maine returns to Orono for a weekend series against No.6 New Hampshire.
