N.Y.
– Freshman Christin Powers (Canton, N.Y.) netted the Saints’
first goal and added an assist to earn first star of the game as St.
Lawrence powered to a 6-1 win over Colgate on Friday at Appleton Arena. Colgate
freshman netminder Lindsay Bourne
(Redlands, Calif.) preserved a scoreless tie with 16 saves in the
first period, while the Raiders put just four shots on Saints sophomore Rachel
Barrie (Arnprior, Ont.). St.
Lawrence took a 1-0 lead at 8:10 of the second, when the Saints broke on a
two-on-one, with Raider sophomore Katie Breen
(North Andover, Mass.) the only Colgate player back to defend.
St. Lawrence rookie Whitney Carbone (Snyder, N.Y.) crossed
the puck to Powers on the right side, and a quick shot over Bourne’s
shoulder broke the scoreless tie. The
Saints went up 2-0 at 5:37 of the third period when junior Shannon
Smith (Fernie, B.C.) scored the only power-play goal of the game, as
sophomore Ricki-Lee Doyle (Calgary, Alb.) and junior Amanda
Sargeant (Port Moody, B.C.) earned the assists. Just
11 seconds later, the Raiders stole the puck off the face-off, and
freshman Shelby Nelson (Osterville, Mass.)
found classmate Amanda Barre (Grafton,
Ont.) in front of the net who tipped it in to put Colgate on the
board, 2-1. However,
the No. 7 Saints refused to let up, scoring four unanswered goals to put
the Raiders away. Junior Trisha
Powers (Spencerville, Ont.) started the spree at 6:50 of the third, as
Chera Marshall (Prescott, Ont.) and sophomore Gina Kingsbury (Rouyn-Noranda,
Que.) got the helpers. At
8:32, senior Jessica Wilson (Orleans, Ont.) took advantage of a
sprawled Bourne to give St. Lawrence the 4-1 lead.
Just past the mid-way point of the final period, senior captain Meghan
Maguire (East Falmouth, Mass.) scored her third goal of the season off
a set-up by Kingsbury. And,
with just 12.4 seconds left in the game, Doyle put the icing on the
Saints’ win off a feed from Sargeant. Bourne
racked up 43 saves in the loss, while Barrie earned the win with 24 saves
in the game, including 17 in the third period. The two teams finish the conference series with a 4 p.m. game on Saturday, February 23 in Canton.
