HAVEN, Conn. – Colgate’s top scoring line of rookies Cheryl
Setchell (Sydney, N.S.), Kristin
Cirbus (Jamestown, N.Y.), and Amanda
Barre (Grafton, Ont.) had a banner night as the Raiders skated to
a 5-5 tie with Yale on Friday at Ingalls Rink.
Setchell led all scorers with assists on all five Colgate goals,
while Barre racked up a hat-trick plus a helper, and Cirbus netted the
other two Raider goals and added an assist. Yale
and Colgate exchanged blows in the first period, with Bulldog rookie Keely
MacMillan (Portland, Ore.) starting the scoring spree at 4:42,
capitalizing on the only power play chance of the opening stanza.
After receiving a pass from junior Rory Neuner (Haslett, Mich.),
MacMillan fought through a scrum in front of the net to slip the puck over
the goal line and get the Bulldogs on the board. The
Raiders responded at 8:55, when Setchell fed Barre waiting in the slot and
she ripped it over the shoulder of Yale goaltender Katie Hirte (Cottage
Grove, Minn.). The
Bulldogs’ second goal started as a two-on-one opportunity, with senior Sara
Wood (Randolph, Mass.) skating the puck into the zone on the right
side. Wood
passed it over to junior Kaitlin Porcaro (Pelham, N.Y.) at the left
point, and Porcaro dumped it in hard toward the goal, where it deflected
off of junior Deanna McDevitt (So. Boston, Mass.) to give Yale the
2-1 lead at 15:20. Colgate
continued to press the Bulldogs through the waning minutes of the period,
and their chance finally came when Setchell made a centering pass to
Cirbus who deftly deflected it past Hirte to tie the game with 25
seconds left in the opening period. The
teams continued to trade control of the scoreboard in the second, as the
Raiders got their first lead of the game at 1:14 when Barre scored her
second goal of the night, this time on the power play, with Setchell
setting her up from the right face-off circle. Yale
responded just 35 ticks of the clock later, with a goal by freshman Erin
Duggan (Beaumont, Alb.), with Neuner and sophomore Wallis Finger
(New Rochelle, N.Y.) getting credit for the assists. Colgate
took control of the lead at 9:47 of the middle period, as Cirbus tallied
her second of the game when she redirected a shot by Setchell after Barre
set up the play. McDevitt
scored two straight goals to regain the Yale advantage, with her goals
coming at 8:27 and 11:00 of the third period. The
Raiders desperately looked to tie the game, and their chance came at 13:35
when Setchell once again set up Barre, this time for the hat-trick and a
shot at the win. Although
Colgate was not able to put the Bulldogs away, they had several quality
chances in the remainder of regulation and in the overtime period.
Cirbus had prime opportunities in the final minutes, including on
the last play of the game when she fired a shot just wide of the cage, but
she was unable to join Barre with her first career hat-trick. Freshman
Rebecca Lahar (Vienna, Va.) made 30
saves in her third straight start as the Raiders’ backstop. For
the Bulldogs, Hirte finished with 24 stops on the night. Colgate
(10-12-2, 1-6-2 ECAC-North) travels to Princeton for another league
contest on Saturday at 4 p.m., while Yale (6-13-3, 2-8-1 ECAC-North) hosts
Cornell for a 4 p.m. game. Colgate
