R.I.
-- Junior Courtney Johnson
(Falmouth, Mass.) netted a goal and added two assists as No. 7 Brown
surpassed league rival Colgate 5-1 on Friday at Meehan Auditorium. Brown
dominated the game in the first period, putting 18 shots on Raider
freshman goalie Rebecca Lahar (Vienna, Va.).
Only one got past her though, as the Bears opened the scoring at
6:46, when Johnson skated down the left side, and sailed a clear shot over
Lahar’s right shoulder. In
the second stanza, the Raiders mustered some offense, putting four shots
on Brown netminder Katie Germain (Sarnia, Ont.). However, the Bears remained in control of the scoreboard, adding
two more goals to make it 3-0 after 40 minutes of play. Junior Kate Kenny (Toronto, Ont.) netted Brown’s
second goal at 5:07, with Johnson and Ostrander getting credit for the
helpers. Rookie Jessica
Link (Clifton Park, N.Y.) tallied the third goal at 7:39 off of passes from junior Cassie
Turner (Campbellford, Ont.) and senior Kristy Zamora (Oshawa, Ont.). After
sophomore Mandy McCurdy (Johnstown, Ont.) gave the Bears a 4-0 lead
at 3:39 of the final period, the Raiders used a power play to finally get
on the board when rookie leading scorer Cheryl Setchell (Sydney, N.S.)
found the puck in a scramble in front of the net and slipped it over the
goal line for her 12th of the season. Classmates Kristin
Cirbus (Jamestown, N.Y.) and Chelsey
Rhodes (Champion, Alb.) earned
credit for the assists. Sophomore Katie Guay (Westfield, Mass.) tallied a power play
goal for the Bears at 11:46 from Johnson to ice Brown’s victory. Germain
made just 15 saves to earn her fifth win of the season, and second over
the Raiders this year. Lahar
stopped 39 of 44 shots in the Colgate loss. Brown
will host Colgate’s travel partner Cornell on Saturday at 4 p.m. to
finish the weekend, while the Raiders travel to Cambridge, Mass. to take
on Harvard for a 4 p.m. game. Colgate
