Burlington,
Vt. - In a thrilling 2-1 triple-overtime victory,
the Colgate women's ice hockey team has ousted
Vermont out of the playoffs, advancing to the
ECAC Division III semifinals.
The
two teams remained scoreless until 1:33 of the
second period. Jenny Agnew scored for the
Catamounts, with Whitney Gage and Rebecca Godsill
getting credited for assists.
Rookie
Katie Koch (Exeter, N.H.) evened the score
three minutes later off of passes by Heather
Murphy (St. Paul, Minn.) and Annie Stover
(Peapack, N.J.) for the Red Raiders.
After
that, the two teams went without a goal for 81:48
until Murphy achieved the game-winning goal 6:22
into the third overtime period, on a set-up by Kelly
Roos (Milford, Conn.).
In
the marathon 106:22 contest, Vermont's Tiffany
Hayes withstood the onslaught of 58 Colgate
shots. Colgate's Jen Burtraw (Guilford,
Conn.) was up to the test, making 25 saves.
The
Red Raiders will face top-seed and host
Middlebury on March 3rd at 12:30 pm in the
semifinal round of the ECAC Women's Division III
championships. Earlier this season, Colgate
fell to Middlebury 3-2 in Starr Rink. Last
year, the Red Raiders' post-season run was ended
by the eventual national champion Panthers with a
5-1 loss in the ECAC Championship game.
Middlebury is currently undefeated in league play
in their five year program history.
