COLGATE WOMEN'S HOCKEY TEAM SKATES TO 3-2 WIN OVER ST. MARY'S

HAMILTON, N.Y.- Heather Murphy (St. Paul, Minn.) tied the school record for career points to lead the Colgate University women's hockey team to a 3-2 win over visiting St. Mary's University of Winona, Minn. Saturday at Starr Rink.

Murphy, who has 105 career points, opened the scoring for the Red Raiders (4-1) in the first period, when she banged a rebound shot past St. Mary's goalie Missie Meemken at 9:30. Maura Crowell and Abbie Webb assisted Murphy.

Three minutes later, Colgate upped its advantage to 2-0 when Nicole Lehroff scored on a rebound shot at 12:52, assisted by Kara Lisavich and Annie Stover. The Red Raiders outshot St. Mary's 21-3 in the opening period.

Colgate increased its lead to 3-0 at 14:45 of the second period, when freshman Katie Breen scored her first collegiate goal on a wrap-around shot, assisted by Avery McGlenn.

The Cardinals (3-3) cut into Colgate's three-goal lead at 17:58 of the second period on an unassisted goal by Missy Westergren, who beat Colgate goalie Jen Burtraw with a backhander high to the stick side.

St. Mary's second goal came at 12:53 of the final period, when Tasa Kostel scored a power-play goal assisted by Mo Hayes.

Meemken finished with 49 saves as the Red Raiders outshot St. Mary's 52-18. Burtraw stopped 16 shots for Colgate.

Colgate and St. Mary's meet again on Sunday at Starr Rink. Faceoff is 2 p.m.
