COLGATE WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY MOVES TO
DIVISION I BEGINNING IN THE 2001-02 SEASON

October 6, 2000

CENTERVILLE, Mass. -- The ECAC Divisions I and III women's ice hockey leagues will split and form two leagues for each division beginning 2001-02. A new Division III league, to be named later, will also begin with the addition of six schools from Western New York and Pennsylvania.

The Division I league has added an institution and will split into two leagues. Both leagues are yet to be named. Colgate, currently competing in the ECAC Division III league, will move to the Division I ranks starting in 2001-02. Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, St. Lawrence and Yale join Colgate in the group of eight. The group of six contains Boston College, Maine, New Hampshire, Niagara, Northeastern and Providence.

Six new members, from western New York and Pennsylvania, will be added to ECAC Division III and have formed their own league to be named later. Buffalo State, Cortland State, Elmira, Neumann, Plattsburgh State and Utica will play a 20-game league conference schedule with two-game home and away series for the first year only.

The current Division III league will add Salve Regina and St. Michael's in 2001-02 and split into two separate leagues, the NESCAC and an ECAC league to be named.

Both new additions will be in the group of 11 with current members Holy Cross, Manhattanville, MIT, Rensselaer, RIT, Sacred Heart, Southern Maine, Union and Vermont.

The NESCAC league will consist of nine teams and include Amherst, Bowdoin, Colby, Connecticut College, Hamilton, Middlebury, Trinity, Wesleyan and Williams. Both leagues will maintain separate standings and will have separate championships but will retain a scheduling agreement. Each member will play all members of both the NESCAC and the group of 11.

These changes are the result of recent decisions including discussion at the ECAC Fall Convention October 1-3.
