HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Colgate University athletic department has announced the 2002-2003 schedule for the women’s basketball team. The Raiders, who were recently picked to finish third in the Patriot League pre-season poll, will travel to three tournaments; face a challenging non-conference schedule that features teams from nine conferences and play the typical home-and-away series with each Patriot League member.

“This year’s schedule will be challenging because we play the majority of our non-conference season on the road,” said head coach Beth Spycher Combs. “We really feel that this schedule will benefit us when it comes time to compete in the Patriot League.”

The Raiders open their season at Georgetown on Friday, Nov. 22 before playing in the home opener against Wagner on November 24. ‘Gate returns to the road for contests at the University of
Buffalo on November 26 and Columbia on December 1 before heading to Cornell for the first tournament of the season.

“The Cornell Classic is the first of three very competitive tournaments,” said Spycher Combs. “It will pit us against two old rivals with games against Cornell and Albany.”

The Iowa State Tournament will be the next stop for the Raiders when they face Centenary on December 13 and Iowa State and High Point on December 14.

“Iowa State finished last season ranked 16th in the Coaches’ Poll and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament,” said Spycher Combs. “Competing against a team like the Cyclones will help our young team prepare for our conference tournament.”

Colgate returns to Hamilton for a game versus Quinnipiac on December 22 before heading to their final tournament, the South Alabama Classic. The Raiders will face Georgia Southern on December 29 and Appalachian State on December 30.

The Raiders will ring in the New Year in New Orleans, facing the Privateers on January 2 before heading to Cambridge, Mass., to play Harvard on January 7.

“We’re traveling out of our comfort zone to places like Alabama and Louisiana,” said Spycher Combs. “We’re excited about the challenges our non-conference schedule brings and I think that will prepare us to improve on last season’s record.”

The Patriot League schedule opens on January 11 as Colgate faces Lafayette on Cotterell Court. Other home games include Army on January 18, Bucknell on January 31, Lehigh on February 2, Holy Cross on February 11, Navy on February 21 and American on February 23.

The Raiders head to Holy Cross on January 14, American on January 24, Navy on January 26, Lafayette on February 7, Army on February 15, Lehigh on February 28 and Bucknell on March 2.

The Patriot League Tournament will be played March 7-9 at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.
