Women’s Basketball Rolls Past Appalachian State, 64-53 Malissa Burke sparks Raiders in second half drive.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MOBILE, Ala. – Junior Malissa Burke (Traverse City, Mich.) scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the second half as she led the Colgate women’s basketball team to a 64-53 victory over Appalachian State on Monday afternoon in the Raiders’ final game of the University of South Alabama’s Coca Cola Classic in Mobile, Ala. With the win, Colgate brings its record to an even 5-5 while the Mountaineers fall to 1-9. Appalachian State jumped out to an early 14-4 lead at the 13:37 mark in the first half before the Raiders went on 13-2 run to grab their first lead, 17-16 with 6:55 remaining. The remainder of the half was a back and forth battle with each team exchanging baskets before Burke’s driving lay-up at the buzzer gave Colgate a 28-27 advantage at the intermission. After two quick baskets by the Mountaineers to start the second half, sophomore Allison Lipinski (Garfield Heights, Ohio) and Burke hit on back-to-back three pointers for the Raiders. Colgate then used runs of 7-0 and 10-1 to build the largest lead of the game, 60-44 with 5:28 remaining. Appalachian State battled back over the final minutes but were unable to overcome the deficit as Colgate took the 64-53 victory. Burke had her best game of the 2002-03 campaign, registering season-highs with 17 points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals. Sophomore Leandra Fuller (Harrisburg, Pa.) had her first double-double of the season tallying a season-high 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds while Lipinski added 16 points for the Raiders. Appalachian State was led by Jessica Jank and Aisha Bryant who scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Raiders continue their southern road trip, traveling to New Orleans, La., to face the Privateers on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 8:00 p.m. NOTES: Junior Malissa Burke reached the 800-point plateau in the Appalachian State contest.
