Drops a Heartbreaker to Georgia Southern, 68-65
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MOBILE, ALA. – Sophomore Allison Lipinski (Garfield Heights, Ohio) led all scorers as the Colgate women’s basketball team dropped a heartbreaker on Sunday evening, falling to Georgia Southern, 68-65 in the Raiders’ first game of the University of South Alabama’s Coca Cola Classic in Mobile, Ala. The first half featured seven ties and nine lead changes with Georgia Southern taking the largest lead, 32-25 with 2:40 remaining but Colgate responded, outscoring the Eagles 9-6 over the final minutes to go into intermission trailing 38-34. Colgate kept the contest close in the first half by shooting 46.4 percent from the floor while holding the Eagles to 33.3 percent. Both teams tallied 13 field goals, with two coming from beyond the arc, but Georgia Southern held the edge in free throws, making 10 while the Raiders hit six. Colgate took control early in the second half, going on a 7-2 run to take a 41-40 lead at the 17:33 mark. The Raiders were able to expand their lead to as many as five, leading 52-47 with 12:54 left in the game but foul trouble slowed Colgate’s charge. The Eagles finished the game on a 7-2 run to take the victory, 68-65. Lipinski led all scorers with a 23-point performance, hitting on 8-of-17, including 4-of-9 three-pointers. Junior Malissa Burke (Traverse City, Mich.) and sophomore Leandra Fuller (Harrisburg, Pa.) scored 14 and eight points, respectively. Sophomore Milaina Lagzdins (Burlington, Ontario) and senior Alison Hanson (Norwalk, Iowa) led Colgate with six rebounds apiece. Georgia Southern (7-2) had three players score in double-digits. Nicole Newton tallied 14, Jessica Everest had 12 and Dana Benemon added 10. The Classic continues tomorrow, Monday, Dec. 30, with Colgate (4-5) playing Appalachian State at 3:30 p.m., and South Alabama challenging Georgia Southern at 5:45 p.m. Live stats will be available for each game via the internet at www.USAJaguars.com.
