CORNELL, N.Y. –The Colgate women’s basketball team won the opening
game of the Cornell Tournament, defeating Long Island, 49-41 at Newman
Arena on Friday evening.
With the win, the Raiders improve to 2-3 and move onto the championship
game tomorrow evening where they will face the winner of the Cornell and
Albany game. The Blackbirds fall to 0-4 on the season and will face the
loser of the Cornell and Albany game in the consolation round.
Colgate jumped out to an early lead with an 8-2 run to begin the game
before both teams went cold with neither scoring over a four minute
stretch. Long Island’s Tamika Dudley broke the scoring drought with a
lay-up to begin an 8-0 Blackbird run that would give Long Island its first
lead of the game, 10-8 at 10:22. Over the next eight minutes, the
Blackbirds would stretch their lead to eight, taking a 22-14 lead with
2:55 remaining in the half but the Raiders bounced back, going on a 5-0
run over the final minutes to cut Long Island’s lead to 22-19 going into
the intermission.
The Blackbirds came out strong in the second half, extending their lead to
32-25 before two made foul shots by sophomore Allison Lipinski (Garfield
Heights, Ohio) and a lay-up by freshman Devon Warwick (Amesbury, Mass.)
cut the Long Island lead to 32-29. The Blackbirds Tamika Dudley and
Warwick traded foul shots before Raider junior Malissa Burke (Traverse
City, Mich.) hit a three to tie the game at 33 apiece with 12:25 left in
the game. Colgate’s shooting went cold again, allowing Long Island to go
on a 6-1 run, taking a 41-36 lead with 6:52 left but the Raiders came back
behind back-to-back-to-back lay-ups by Warwick, senior Alison Hanson
(Norwalk, Iowa) and sophomore Malaina Lagzdins (Burlington, Ontario) to
take a 44-41 lead with 3:10 remaining in the game. Colgate’s stifling
defense shut the Blackbirds down over the final minutes to take the
victory, 49-41.
The Raiders were led by Hanson and Burke who registered 12 points apiece.
Hanson played her finest game of the season, adding eight rebounds, six
steals and three assists. Lipinski chipped in eight points, going 6-for-7
from the foul line.
Tamika Dudley led Long Island with 12 points while Ravin Chase chipped in
10.
The Raiders return to Ithaca, N.Y., tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 7 as they
will play in the championship game of the Cornell University Tournament at
7 p.m.
