Suzanne Bowen’s Jersey on January 31 Women’s basketball’s all-time scoring leader to be honored during half time of men’s game versus Bucknell.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Colgate University athletic department has announced that it will retire the uniform number of Suzanne Bowen, the school’s all-time leading scorer in women’s basketball history, on January 31. Bowen will return to campus for the ceremony which will take place during half time of the men’s basketball game versus Bucknell. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. The women’s team will face Bucknell in a 5:30 p.m., match-up. “We are very pleased to honor Suzanne by retiring her number,” said Colgate women’s basketball head coach Beth Spycher Combs. “She is the only women’s player in Colgate history to reach the 2,000 point mark and she had a great career here in Hamilton. We hope that Raider fans will join us for our game as well as for her ceremony on the 31st.” Bowen, a four-year letterwinner, finished her career in 1991 holding 19 school records, including ranking first as Colgate’s all-time scorer with 2,016 points and second in rebounding with 947 boards. Bowen, who served as captain in her junior and senior seasons, also placed in the Top-10 for scoring average, rebounding average, assists, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, steals and blocked shots. She still holds the school scoring record and is the only woman to score over 2,000 career points. She is one of only two women to score 500 points in a season, which she accomplished three times. As a senior she was first team all-Patriot League and second team all-Eastern College Athletic Conference. She finished 24th in the nation in scoring with 22.0 points per game, had 10 double-doubles, was selected the Patriot League Player of the Week five times and twice received the ECAC Division I’s weekly award. As a junior she was first team all-North Atlantic Conference and a member of the NAC all-tournament team. She led the conference in scoring, steals and blocked shots and ranked second in rebounding and field goal percentage.
