Edges Army, 65-62
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE HAMILTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Emily Braseth (E. Grand Rapids, Mich.) led three Raiders who scored in double-digits as Colgate picked up its first Patriot League win of the season over Army, 65-62, on Saturday evening on Cotterell Court. With the win, the Raiders improve to 6-9 overall and 1-2 in the League while Army falls to 9-7 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Colgate got on the board first as the Black Knights were assessed a technical foul for not turning in their starting line-up on time and freshman Meghan Curtin (Bronx, N.Y.) connected on two free throws. Army came right back, going on a 7-1 run over the next two minutes to take a 7-3 lead before sophomore Leandra Fuller (Harrsiburg, Pa.) nailed a jumper to cut the Army lead to two. The Black Knights would use a 5-0 run to take the largest lead of the half by either team, a 19-14 advantage at the 10:30 mark. Colgate came back to tie the game at 19 apiece with 8:23 remaining as sophomore Milaina Lagzdins (Burlington, Ontario) hit a lay-up and Braseth converted a three-point play, hitting a lay-up and then nailing a free-throw. The teams battled back and fourth the rest of the way; with neither team going up by more than three points before Colgate took the slim 31-30 lead into half-time. The second half began the same way as the first ended, with each team taking a slight lead and then losing it before Colgate’s Malissa Burke (Traverse City, Mich.) began a 7-0 run by draining a three-pointer. Braseth and senior Ali Hanson (Norwalk, Iowa) then connected on lay-ups to give Colgate a 47-43 lead with 13:09 remaining in the game. After Army tied the game at 50 apiece, Burke connected on her second trey of the game, the 76th of her career, moving her into fourth place in Raider women’s basketball’s history for career three-pointers. Colgate took its largest lead of the game, a six point advantage with 1:54 left when Lagzdins hit a lay-up to give the Raiders a 64-58 lead. The Black Knights scored on two foul shots and a lay-up and Lagzdins connected on 1-of-2 foul shots to give Colgate the 65-62 victory. The Raiders were led by Braseth for the fifth straight game as she went 6-for-13 from the field and 4-for-5 from the foul line to register 16 points. She also grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists. Burke added 12 points and a team-high four assists while Lagzdins had 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Hanson tallied nine points, four assists and two steals. While Army shot 41.8% from the floor, the scrappy Colgate team outrebounded the Black Knights, 41-32 and came up with five more steals than Army. The Black Knights were led by Amy Saal’s 19 points while Christine Gassman and Katie Mcfarlane added 13 and 12 points respectively. Colgate is back in action on Friday, Jan. 24 as they travel to Washington, D.C., to take on American at 5:30 p.m.
