Hamilton, N.Y. - Kerri Downs and Katherine Hanks combined for 47 of Dartmouth's 82 points as the Big Green downed Colgate 82-69 in non-conference women's basketball action at Cotterell Court Saturday. Downs was 10-19 from the field and a perfect 8-8 from the free-throw line for a game-high 30 points while Hanks was 8-15 for 17 points to go along with her game-high 15 rebounds. Colgate is now 0-1 while Dartmouth starts their season at 1-0.
Colgate came out firing in the first half on two three-point field goals by freshman Allison Lipinski (Garfield, Ohio/Garfield), a lay-up by fellow first-year Emily Braseth (E. Grand Rapids, Michigan/E. Grand Rapids), and a short-jumper by Jaime Glenn (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J./Point Pleasant) to take a 10-6 lead early in the game. The Raiders led the entire first half until Dartmouth's Katie Skelly hit two free throws to give the Big Green a 25-24 lead.
Dartmouth increased its lead to 29-26 until Colgate reclaimed the lead, 33-29, with 5:31 remaining in the half, on a 7-0 run sparked by jumpers from Lipinski, Sarah Parks (Wilmington, Del./Ursuline Academy) and a three-pointer from junior Ali Hanson (Norwalk, Iowa/Dowling). Dartmouth outscored the Raiders 15-8 in final minutes of the first half to take a slim 44-41 lead into the break.
Dartmouth increased its lead in the second half in the first five minutes of play to 61-48 and never looked back as Hanks and Downs combined to score the next 15 of Dartmouth 17 points in the second stanza.
A pair of freshman led the Raiders in scoring as Lipinski netted 16 points, 12 from four three-pointers, and Leandra Fuller added 12 shooting a solid 5-7 from the field. Sophomore Malissa Burke, who led Colgate in scoring last season averaging 9.4 points per game, chipped in with 13 points. Colgate returns to action at home Monday, November 19 against Georgetown University for a 7 p.m. tip-off. |
