Colgate Women's Basketball Routs UPR-Mayaguez, 84-37

San Juan, Puerto Rico – Colgate used double-figure scoring efforts from three freshman and one sophomore to rout the University of Puerto-Rico Mayaguez 84-37 in game nine of the San Juan Shootout Sunday.  Colgate improves to 1-4 while UPR-Mayaguez drops to 0-7.  With the win, Colgate’s  Beth Spycher earned her first collegiate win as a head coach. 

 Freshman Allison Lipinski (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield) led the Raiders with 20 points on 8 for 11 shooting including a 4 for 6 mark from three-point range in only 14 minutes of action.  Sophomore Malissa Burke (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) netted 14 points, all in the first half, while freshmen Lisa Goodwin (Novato, Calif./Novato) and Milaina Lagzdins (Oakville, Ontario, Canada/Nelson) each chipped in with 11 points a piece. 

Lisandra Sotomayor and Madelyn Ramirez led UPR-Mayaguez with 12 and 11 points, respectively.  Ramirez also led the Janes in rebounding with six. 

The Raiders had control of the game from the opening tip, outscoring UPR-Mayaguez 30-15 in the first 10 minutes of the first half as Burke had the hot hand and struck for 12 of her 14 first half points.  Colgate increased its cushion to 46-17, holding UPR-Mayaguez to just four points in the final 10 minutes of the second half, while Lagzdins scored nine of the Raiders’ final 16 points on three lay-ups and three foul shots. 

Colgate continued to dominate in the second half as Lipinski, who scored 12 points in the first half, netted a quick eight points on two threes and a lay-up to give the Raiders a 37-point advantage at 54-17 with 18 minutes remaining in the game.  UPR-Mayaguez never got closer as the Raiders led by as much as 49 points late in the second half.  Goodwin scored all 11 of her points in the final 10 minutes of the game with eight free throws in as many tries and one three pointer. 

The Raiders’ Kesha Caldwell had a game and career-best 12 rebounds, including seven offensive boards as Colgate held a 55-24 advantage in rebounding over UPR-Mayaguez.

Colgate returns to action Saturday, December 1 against intra-state rival  Cornell for a 2 p.m. tip-off at Cotterell Court.
