Hamilton, N.Y. - The Colgate University women's basketball team used a concerted team effort with four players in double figures and all eight players in the box score scoring to down Lehigh 73-57, Wednesday night at Cotterell Court. Colgate improves to 11-13 overall and 5-4 in the Patriot League while Lehigh had its two game win streak snapped to fall to 10-12 and 6-3 in the Patriot League.
Vicky Briscoe (Landover, Md./Riverdale Baptist) led the Raiders with 14 points including eight points on two threes and a jump shot in a 15-0 run with 9:57 remaining in the second half and the Raiders trailing by six at 47-41. Allison Lipinski (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights) netted 13 points on 3-for-4 shooting from three-point range, while Milaina Lagzdins (Oakville, Ontario/Nelson) scored 10 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to record her fourth double-double. Sarah Parks rounded out the Raiders in double-figures with 10 points, two assists and three steals. Malissa Burke (E. Grand Rapids, Mich./E. Grand Rapids), Leandra Fuller (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and Jaime Glenn (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) chipped in with nine, eight and seven points, respectively. Burke had a career-high seven assists and added three steals while Fuller added seven rebounds and swatted away four shots. With 28 blocked shots, Fuller is now ninth in single season blocked shots.
Lehigh had two players in double-figures as Anne Tierney led with a double-double scoring 13 points and grabbing 14 rebounds while Jana Ranson had 14 points for the Mountain Hawks who suffered from 38.1 percent shooting performance from the floor.
After a sluggish first half with both teams shooting poorly at 35 percent, the Raiders trailed 26-24 at the break.
"We came out slow in the first half, we were hanging around, but we weren't executing our game plan as effectively as we needed too," said first-year Colgate head coach Beth Spycher. "The second half was a different story for us, and we executed our plays and played with more emotion."
Colgate battled back and forth with Lehigh but could not get over the hump and trailed by as much as six with 12:26 remaining, before the Raiders used a 15-0 run to take a nine point lead at 56-47 with 8:14 left in the second half. Colgate hit three consecutive three-pointers in the run with Briscoe connecting on two and Burke hitting for one.
"The key for us tonight was the fact that everyone stepped up big within their role," said Spycher. "Burke led us emotionally in the second half and Vicky hit big shots for us down the stretch. We did the little things as a team to win and people executed when we needed them to."
