Raiders Refuse To Lose Downing Army 65-61

WEST POINT, N.Y. - With the game tied at 58 a piece with 2:51 remaining, the Colgate women's basketball team converted five out of six free throws and used a clutch driving lay-up from Vicky Briscoe (Landover, Md./Riverdale Baptist) to earn a 65-61 win over Army in Patriot League action, Tuesday night at Christl Arena.  Colgate snapped a three-game losing streak and improves to 12-16 overall and 7-6 in the league while Army drops to 9-17, 4-9.  

 

The Raiders led by as much as 15 points at 54-39 with 8:11 left in the second half before Army surged back to knot the game up on a 19-4 run on the heals of 17 points by Katie MacFarlane.  MacFarlane finished with a game-high 21 points. 

 

Malissa Burke (E. Grand Rapids, Mich./E. Grand Rapids) led the Raiders in scoring for the third straight game netting 16 points, including two free throws with five seconds remaining with the game in question at 63-61. Leandra Fuller (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) netted 12 points, all in the second half, and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while Emily Braseth (E. Grand Rapids, Mich./E. Grand Rapids) added 10 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals off the bench.  Briscoe ended the night with a neat five-point, five-rebound performance and had a team-high four assists placing her in a tie for 10th in single-season assists with 110.  Jaime Glenn (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant)  added eight points and eight rebounds for the Raiders in a solid performance off of the bench.

 

Led by MacFarlane's 21 points and 11 rebounds, Army had three players in double-figures. Halaevalu Helu netted 15 points and shared game-high rebounding honors with MacFarlane grabbing 11 boards while Christine Gassman chipped in with 14 points.

 

Colgate returns to action Saturday, February 23 at 1 p.m. when it will take on the Leopards of Lafayette in its final home game of 2001-02.
