Hamilton, NY – The Colgate University women's basketball team, in a vote by league coaches, sports information directors, and the media, was picked to finish third in the Patriot League this season in a poll released today. Its the highest ranking the Red Raiders have ever received for a preseason poll.

Also earning honors for Colgate was senior Frances Boone (White Plains, NY), who was voted to the preseason All-Patriot League team.

Sixth-year head coach Ron Rohn led the Red Raiders to their best finish in 10 years last season with a 13-16 overall record and a 6-6 Patriot League mark. They finished tied for third in the conference after losing to Bucknell 69-66 in the semifinals of the 2000 Patriot League tournament.

Colgate returns three of its five starters from a year ago, including Boone, who will anchor the team’s backcourt. She led the squad in scoring the entire season and concluded her junior campaign with a 12.9 scoring average, while garnering second team All-Patriot League honors. She also led the league in steals and set a Colgate record for steals in a season with 96.

Also returning is junior Sarah Parks (Wilmington, Del.) and sophomore Colleen McCaffrey (W. Springfield, Mass.). Parks is back as one of the team’s best all-around players and looks to pick up where she left off at the end of last season. At 6-1, McCaffrey, who was named to the Patriot League all-rookie team last year, returns as the team’s best rebounder and will play an integral role for the team.

Holy Cross, which won both the regular season championship and the tournament last season, was the heavy favorite to win again this year with 15 first-place votes. Bucknell was picked to finish second with five first-place votes, while Colgate tallied one vote. Lehigh was fourth, followed by Lafayette, Army and Navy.

The Red Raiders open up their 2000-01 season at home when they host Drexel University on Nov. 18.
