- PHILOSOPHY OF PHYSICAL
EDUCATION
Colgate's recognition of
the importance of personal wellness and physical
fitness is fostered through its required physical
education program.
The Department of
Physical Education, in keeping with current
philosophy, will focus on enriching and expanding
the student's short and long term views and
attitudes toward physical activity. The
department will promote a holistic approach to
personal well-being by offering instruction in
leisure-time activities that will stimulate an
enduring sense of the joy and exhilaration of
physical activity.
-
- GOALS
The
program is designed to motivate students to
develop knowledge and skills that will enable
them to participate in and respect the various
forms of physical activity and to develop an
appreciation for sport and ongoing physical fitness.
-
- COURSE CREDIT
Classes
normally meet over a six week unit and earn one
PHED credit per unit. Attendance is required. Credit
will be granted as long as no more than the
equivalent of one week's classes are missed
within the 6 week unit. No medical excuses (i.e. colds,
flu) will be accepted for missed classes, but
medical exemptions or waivers may be authorized
by the Health Center.
-
- EXTRACURRICULAR CREDIT

physical education credit per year may be granted
for participation in a varsity sport, a club
sport and/or another selected pre-approved
activity. Varsity athletes may earn up to two
credits (over 2 years) through that option, To do so
varsity athletes must be listed on NCAA squad list for the year.
Participants
in club sports may earn up to one PHED credit. Students
must have at least 30 hours of recorded participation with the club.
-
- DRESS

are expected to dress appropriately for each
activity. Appropriate dress for most classes
consists of sneakers, shorts, t-shirt and/or
sweat pants. Exceptions to this will be
determined by the activity instructor.
-
- SERVICES
Most equipment required
for instructional use is provided. To secure equipment, students submit
their Colgate student identification card at the
Huntington Gym Equipment Issue Room. In certain
activities, like scuba, equipment
