- PHILOSOPHY OF PHYSICAL
EDUCATION
Colgate's recognition of the
importance of personal wellness and physical fitness is fostered
through its required physical education program.
The Department of Physical
Education, in keeping with current philosophy, will focus on
enriching and expanding the student's short and long term views and
attitudes toward physical activity. The department will promote a
holistic approach to personal well-being by offering instruction in
leisure-time activities that will stimulate an enduring sense of the
joy and exhilaration of physical activity.
-
- GOALS
The
program is designed to motivate students to develop knowledge and
skills that will enable them to participate in and respect the
various forms of physical activity and to develop an appreciation
for sport and ongoing physical fitness.
-
- COURSE CREDIT
Classes
normally meet
over a five week unit and earn one PHED credit per unit. Attendance
is required. Credit will be granted as long as no more than one
class is missed within the 5 week unit. No medical excuses (i.e.
colds, flu) will be accepted for missed classes, but medical
exemptions or waivers may be authorized by the Health Center.
-
- EXTRACURRICULAR CREDIT
One physical education
credit per year may be granted for participation in a varsity sport,
a club sport and/or another selected pre-approved activity.

BAND:
Varsity athletes, Cheerleaders and Pep Band members may earn up to
one
credit per year of participation. To do so
varsity athletes must be listed on NCAA squad list for the year. All

CLUB SPORTS/ DANCE CLUBS:
Participants in club sports may earn up to one PHED credit in a
single club. Only one credit will count for each club toward the 2
credit PHED requirement. Students must have at least 30 hours of
recorded participation with the club.
Student
appeals for Club Sport PHED credit will be considered for no longer
than 60 days following the end of the respective semester by the
Chair of Physical Education, so it is essential that records be kept
carefully and completely.
-

Students
are expected to dress appropriately for each
activity. Appropriate dress for most classes
consists of sneakers, shorts, t-shirt and/or
sweat pants. Exceptions to this will be
determined by the activity instructor.
-

equipment
required for instructional use is provided. To secure equipment,
