NEW YORK, NY – The Colgate University men's
tennis team headed to New York City this past weekend for the ECAC
Championships held at Flushing Meadows. #11 Colgate picked up its
first ever match win with a 4-3 decision over #14 Navy on Saturday.
On Friday, Colgate dropped a 4-0 decision to #6 Penn State in a match that
was shortened due to rain. Sunday, Colgate fell to Ivy League
opponent #10 Dartmouth 4-3, in what was a very competitive match.
Picking up singles match wins against Navy were Reed Hagmann (Short
Hills, NJ/Millburn) who defeated Cam Lickle 7-6, 6-3. Jake
Heims (Paradise Valley, AZ/Brophy College Prep) downed Ryan Osgood
6-2, 6-4. Eric Saccullo (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset) defeated
Brandon Carter 6-1, 7-5. Blake Willmarth (Grosse Pointe Farms,
MI/Grosse Pointe South) earned a fourth singles win for Colgate by
knocking off Daniel Huynh 6-2, 6-2.
On
the doubles side, Colgate was victorious in one of its three matches.
Saccullo and Zander Lowe (Concord, MA/Concord-Carlisle) beat
the team of McGrath/Carter 8-3.
Colgate did not win any matches against Penn State, but Coach Martin Perry
was pleased with his team's performance against the higher seeded Nittany
Lions. "We played pretty well, and if we could have gotten a point
here or there you never know what could have happened," said Perry.
Hagmann won another singles match versus Dartmouth by beating
Neal Bobba 6-4, 6-3, giving Hagmann a 2-1 singles record for the weekend.
Saccullo downed Ben Kereshi 7-5, 7-5 to run his record to 2-1 on
the weekend as well.
Hagmann teamed up with Evan Ambrose (Catskill, NY/Catskill) to
defeat Bobba and Drew Dinkmeyer 9-7 in doubles actions. Willmarth
and Saccullo combined forces to down Reyes and Webb of Dartmouth
8-4.
After
a successful outing, the Colgate men's tennis team prepares for the
Patriot League Individuals at Lehigh University this weekend. Action
gets underway at 9 a.m. Saturday, October 12th.
