COLGATE WINS TWO SINGLES
AND ONE DOUBLES TITLE AT PATRIOT LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Hagmann takes #1 singles bracket,
Saccullo wins #3 singles bracket, and teams up with Blake Willmarth for
the #3 doubles title.

Bethlehem, Pa. – Colgate University’s Reed
Hagmann, the 2001 Patriot League number two fall singles champion,
overcame a second seed to win the first singles bracket at the 2002
Patriot League Flighted Tennis Championship.
The Patriot League championship, due to
inclement weather, was played on the indoor courts at the Lewis Tennis
Center on the campus of Lehigh University. The two-day championship did
not contest consolation matches.
Hagmann,
the 2001 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, defeated American’s Tushar
Garg (6-0, 6-4) and Lafayette’s Matt Coin (7-6 (5), 6-3) to
earn a championship berth. In the final, Hagmann faced top seeded Arnie
Albornoz of Army. After dropping the first set 3-6, Hagman battled
back to win 7-5 and 10-8 in the Superbreaker.
The second singles
championship featured top-seeded John Sabia of Army battling
Lehigh’s Ryan Osgood. Sabia battled back for the victory, 2-6, 6-3,
10-6. The Black Knight earned a first round bye followed by a 6-1, 7-6 (3)
victory over Lafayette’s Brett Warren to advance to the finals.
Colgate’s Eric
Saccullo won the 2002 third singles championship with a 6-7, 6-2, 10-3
victory over Army’s Rafael Albornoz. Saccullo, the second seed,
defeated American’s Guilluame Tarralle (6-3, 6-7 [5], 11-9) in the
first round and Navy’s Brandon Carter (6-3, 6-0) in the semifinals.
American University’s
Andreas Kulcsar, the top seeded fourth singles player, defeated Navy’s
Chris McGrath, 6-1, 6-4 for the title. Kulcsar was the 2001 sixth
singles individual champion as well. En route to the title, Kulcsar
upended Lafayette’s Dan Seward 6-2, 6-1 after garnering the first
round bye.
Navy’s Davy Lee,
the top seeded fifth singles player, advanced to the championship match
following a first round bye and a second round 6-4, 6-4 victory over
Bucknell’s Asher Salam. Lee defeated American University’s Juan
Carlo Vazquez in the final, 6-1, 6-0.
The sixth singles crown
went to American University’s Jonah Fliegelman. The junior advanced
to the championship match with victories over Lehigh’s Jeff Samuels
(6-2, 6-2) and Colgate’s Blake Willmarth (6-3, 3-6, 10-7). In the
final, Fliegelman defeated Army’s Carl Fisher (4-6, 6-1, 10-8), the
second seed.
In the doubles
competition, Navy, American and Colgate took home championship honors.
The first doubles
champion was Navy’s Cam Lickle and Osgood. The Midshipmen
squad defeated Army’s Arnie Albornoz and Rafael Albornoz
8-6.
The second doubles
champion featured American’s Taralle and Juan Jaysingh. The
Eagles team defeated Colgate’s Zander Lowe and Jake Heims
8-6.
Third doubles went to
Colgate’s Saccullo and Willmarth. The Raider side defeated
Army’s Jarrett Skrobarcek and Carl Fisher 8-4.
The four-team Patriot
League Men’s Tennis Team Championship will be held April 18-19, 2003 at
the site of the highest seed.
