Raiders Blank UMASS 7-0

February 17, 2002

Hamilton, NY.  The men's tennis team overwhelmed challenger UMASS on Sunday to move to 5-2 on the spring.  The emotions from its dramatic 4-3 victory against Patriot League Champion Army seemed to carry over into this triumph.  The Raiders have now won 5 straight matches.

The squad did not lose a single set in the competition and is already 2 games better than its 3-4 record at this point last season.

In doubles play, Colgate emphatically shut down UMASS, who won a total of 8 games in the three matches combined.  The pairing of JP Johnson and Reed Hagmann improved to 3-0 together on the year.

Meanwhile, sophomore Evan Ambrose extended his singles winning streak to four matches by defeating Scott Sans Leeb 7-5, 6-2.  Junior Josh Cohn earned his first victory of the spring season by pummeling Phil Cohen 6-0, 6-2.  Reed Hagmann managed to improve his team-best record to 14-5 against Todd Champeau.  Also, Sophomore Zander Lowe, maybe playing the best tennis of his young college career, won 6-3, 6-1.  Lowe has won his last 3 singles and 5 doubles matches.

Nevertheless, the team prepares for what looks to be its toughest weekend of the season, with competition at Cornell (2/23 at noon) and against American (2/24 at 10:00).
