Contact: Mike Zimmerman February 1, 2003 HAMILTON, NY - On an exciting Saturday afternoon at Colgate's Lineberry Natatorium, the Colgate University men's and women's swim teams split with the Binghamton Bearcats. The men lost a heartbreaker 123-120 while the women held on for a 137-104 victory. It all came down to the final event of the meet for the men, as Binghamton won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:11.80 to Colgate's second-place finish of 3:12.21. Colgate took the early lead in the first men's event capturing the 400 Medley title in 3:38.14. While the Raiders only managed to win two other races all afternoon, they kept the meet close taking home most of the second and third place finishes. Leading Colgate was senior James Hadley, who earned a first place finish in the 50 freestyle, finishing in 21.67. Junior Mike Schierhold (1:58.64) narrowly defeated Colgate's first-year Tom Noel (1:58.72) and junior Brett Nichols (1:59.37) in the 200 backstroke for Colgate's other first-place finish. The Colgate women managed to hold off their Binghamton counterpart winning five of the eleven events. The women's squad finished strong as first-year Sherri Bontrager (2:29.33), sophomore Caitlin Craumer (2:31.20), and senior Kate Martin (2:33.27) swept the top three places in the 200 breaststroke. Colgate also ended the meet with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:38.63. Junior Alice Garnett sailed to a first-place finish in the 200 IM in 2:11.70. The Raiders will next compete at Bucknell in the Patriot League Championships on February 20-22.
