SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Colgate men's and women's swimming and diving teams won seven events in a loss to a very tough Syracuse squad on Saturday, but Bill Roberts is very pleased with his group.

"For the first meet of the season, our goal was to go in and give 100 percent effort from beginning to end and our kids put forth a very good effort against a tough team," said Roberts.

Colgate won three diving events in the meet.  Freshman Emily McAuliff won the women's three meter dive with a score of 249.52.  Sophomore Lane Ellis captured the men's one meter dive with a score of 258.82. Freshman Jen Rodgers picked up a victory in the women's one meter dive with a score of 235.26.

"Matt Leone and his crew got the team off to a great start with their performances today," said Roberts of the diving teams success.

Winners in the pool for Colgate were Meghan Binder, who won the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.41.  Matt Vuturo earned the win in the men's 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 59.52.

Colgate also won two relays in the meet.  The women's 200 yard freestyle relay team of Emily Cobb, Meredith Erickson, Chrissy Zaika and Elizabeth Gaffuri won with a time of 1:42.64.  The men won its 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:30.92.  That team is comprised of Quinn Emmett, James Marione, Andrew Wright and Greg Jachno.

"Several swims were near or at in-season bests for us today.  James Hadley (50 and 100 free), Zaika (50 free and 100 fly), and Binder (100 fly and 100 breast) were just a few who are off to solid starts," remarked Roberts.

Colgate is back in action next Saturday when they travel to Holy Cross for a 1:30 p.m. start time.
