HAMILTON, N.Y. - Colgate University head soccer coach Mike Doherty has announced the signing of seven student-athletes for the men's soccer program.

Joining the Raiders in 2002 is Randall Carter (Washington, D.C./Georgetown Day), Michael de Pass (Trinidad and Tobago/St. Mary's), Derek Johnson (Barrington, R.I./Barrington), Matt Jackson (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee), Bryant Meckley (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern), Sean O'Sullivan (Brooksville, Fla./Central High), and Benjamin Werber (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrew's)

"Overall, I am pleased with this season's freshman class," said Doherty.  "We've committed quality players and created instant depth and speed for our team, especially in the midfield and defense."

Carter, de Pass, and O'Sullivan are each slated as defenders for the Raiders while Johnson, Jackson, Meckley and Werber will each challenge for playing time in the midfield.

Carter, a 2000 and 2001 Mid-Atlantic Conference selection, netted eight goals and passed off 12 assists as a senior leading the Georgetown Day Grasshoppers to consecutive Mid-Atlantic Conference championships in 2000 and 2001.

de Pass, who, according to Doherty, has the skill level to step right into the Raiders' lineup and see playing time early on in his career, was a member of Trinidad and Tobago's U-17 National Team.  de Pass, played as a forward, midfielder and defender for St. Mary's and had two assists from his stopper-back position in a shortened senior season due to the staging of the U-17 National Tournament.

O'Sullivan, a decorated high school midfielder, holds four school records including Most Goals in a Season (31) and Assists in a Season (23), both amassed during his senior season.  O'Sullivan is a two-time all Tri-County selection (2001, 2002) and was named the all-GCAC Player of the Year.

Johnson served as Barrington High School's team captain during his senior season and passed off 10 assists to go with his six goals en route to being selected to the All-Division Open Division team.

Jackson, a local product from nearby Camillus, N.Y., will vie for a position in the Raiders midfield.  Jackson was a honorable mention Section III all-league selection during his senior year after netting eight goals and passing off 10 assists for the West Genesee Wildcats.

Meckley, an all-YAIAA first team selection for the Southwestern High School, holds the school record for points in a career with 105 on 32 goals and a school-record 41 assists in four seasons for the Mustangs.

Werber, a two-time all-Southeastern Athletic Conference and Boca News All-Area Honorable mention selection, led the Saint Andrew's Scots to the 2001 District 13-A Championship netting nine goals and passing off seven assists as a senior.

The Raiders, who finished 2001 with a 7-11-1 record, open the 2002 season Saturday, August 31 at 11 a.m. against the Virginia Military Institute.  The Raiders home opener is scheduled for Saturday, September 7 at 7 p.m. against St. Bonaventure.
