BEAT MAINE 4-1 September 13, 2002 Contact: Mike Zimmerman Phone: (315) 228-6761 Fax: (315) 228-7977 HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Colgate men's soccer team used four second half goals to beat the Black Bears of Maine 4-1 Friday night at Van Doren Field in the first round of the Raider Classic. Maine (1-2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when Rob Dow scored an unassisted goal, his first of the season. Colgate went on to net four second half goals, more than it has scored all season. At the 54th minute freshman Sean O'Sullivan (Brooksville, FL/Central) netted his first collegiate goal off a pass from Jon Cook (Oneonta/Laurens Central), tying the game at 1-1. Six minutes later, Reed Grimes (Lexington, KY/Henry Clay) knocked in his second goal of the season. O'Sullivan sent in an excellent corner, that Marc Hubbard (Durham, NH/Oyster River) headed to Grimes for the game-winner. With just three minutes to play Grimes picked up his second goal of the game when he knocked in a diving header off a pass from John Gelman (Eastchester/Eastchester), giving the Raiders a 3-1 advantage. Colgate added one more for good measure with 19 seconds left in the contest. Cook scored on an excellent sequence of plays by the Raiders. Peter Bourquin (Avon, CT/Avon) tossed a throw-in to Zack Stuppy (York, ME/York) who headed it over the keeper to Cook who pounded it in, giving the Raiders a 4-1 victory. Josh Sjostrom made five saves in net for Maine, while Will Martin (Excelsior, MN/Breck) turned aside five shots for Colgate. Colgate outshot the Black Bears 19-8, and outcornered them 10-0 in the match. Colgate ran its record to 2-1-1 and faces Duquesne Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Van Doren Field. Duquesne beat Rider 1-0 in earlier action Friday night at Van Doren Field with a goal in the second overtime. Rider takes on Maine Saturday at 4:30 p.m. |
