COLGATE MEN'S SOCCER
OPENS THE SEASON WITH A 2-2 TIE AT VMI August 31, 2002 Contact: Mike Zimmerman Phone: (315) 228-6761 Fax: (315) 228-7977 LEXINGTON, VA. - The Colgate University men's soccer team kicked off its season Saturday at VMI, and came away with a 2-2 tie in double overtime. All of the scoring came in the first half with VMI starting things off when senior forward Daniel Whitehall (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Suncoast), put his first of two scores in the back of the net off the feed from forward Ryan Martin (Houma, La./Ellendor Memorial) just 2:10 into the contest. Colgate bounced back eight minutes later when Andrew Rollins (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) sent a corner to junior defenseman Kit Edwards (Getzville, NY./Williamsville) who headed the ball to sophomore defenseman Reed Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) who put the ball in the back of the net, tying the game at one apiece. Whitehall put the Keydets back up by one when he scored on a pass from sophomore defenseman Logan Manning (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) at the 22:25 mark. Colgate would strike back with just five minutes to play in the first half when senior defenseman Marc Hubbard (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) sent a ball to freshman midfielder Sean O'Sullivan (Brooksville, Fla./Central) who played a beautiful ball to junior forward Zack Stuppy (York, Me./York) who chested it down and sent the ball past the keeper tying the score at two. The rest of the game was played in a scoreless tie but each team had many opportunities. "They had some opportunities, but we had more and we should have finished a few more, but we played well and out played them in the second half, we just have to work on our finishes," said assistant coach Chip Warner after the game. Colgate out shot VMI 15-12 and had 13 corners to just three for the Keydets. Junior goalkeeper Jon Brunell (Holden, Mass./St. John's) made three stops in net, as did VMI keeper Morgan Harris (Powell, Ohio/Worthington, Kilbourne). Colgate is next in action this Saturday at home when they take on Saint Bonaventure at 7:30 p.m. in Van Doren Field.
