Syracuse Edges Raiders 3-2 in OT Contact: Christina Cracolici Phone: (315) 228-6761
Syracuse, N.Y. Syracuse University's John Andrade netted a far post shot in the third minute of the first overtime period to lift the Orangemen past Colgate 3-2 Wednesday night. It was the
second consecutive year that Colgate and Syracuse had to go to an overtime
period to decide the finale. Last
season, Colgate came out on top as the 3-2 winner.
Syracuse is 1-1 while Colgate drops to 1-2. Behind 2-0 late in the
second half, as Syracuses Matt Torok and Jarrett Park put the Orangemen
ahead with goals in the 51st minute and the 74th
minute, respectively, Colgate closed the gap to 2-1 when Pete
Bourquin (Avon, Conn./Avon) netted his first collegiate goal off an assist
from Jonathan Cook (Oneonta, N.Y./Laurens Central) in the 81st minute. Syracuse held off the Raider attack, and it looked as though the game was in the bag, until Zack Stuppy (York, Maine/York) netted a dramatic goal with three seconds on the clock. Cook carried the ball
up the right wing and crossed the ball to Bourquin on the left side who
then slotted the ball across the six-yard line.
Stuppy pushed the ball
passed the keeper to force the game into overtime. Both teams took turns firing off quick shots in the overtime period before Andrade netted the game winner. Colgate will return to action Saturday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. when they travel to take on Cornell.
