Hamilton, N.Y. - Brian McDermott and Jon Cook each netted goals to give Colgate University a 2-1 victory over Sacred Heart, Tuesday at Van Doren Field. Colgate improves to 5-10-1 while Sacred Heart drops to 3-13-2.
After rattling off 28 shots in the first 68 minutes of action without tallying a goal, Colgate's Brian McDermott finally put the Raiders on the scoreboard netting their first goal of the game carrying the ball down the middle of the field, through Sacred Heart's defense, and powering in an 18-yard shot to the right of a diving Gustavo Reaes. The goal was McDermott's first of the season.
The Raider's offensive pressure continued as they fired off eight more shots in the next 14 minutes until Jonathan Cook headed in the Raider's second goal of the game in the 85th minute on a Marc Hubbard assist. Cook now has four goals and three assists on the season and is the Raider's scoring leader with 11 points.
Sacred Heart closed the gap to 2-1 less than a minute later when Franco Cartiera netted a goal in the 86th minute. Cartiera benefitted from a collision in the box which took Raider keeper Jon Brunell out of the play.
The Raiders out shot the Pioneers 38 to 12. Sacred Heart's Gustavo Reaes had 14 saves while Colgate's Brunell made one.
Colgate will return to action Saturday, November 3 at 7 p.m. at Van Doren field for its final home game of the season. The Raiders will be in action against the Black Knights of Army.
