Navy Downs Raiders With Three Second
Half Goals. Contact: Christina Cracolici Phone: (315) 228-6761 (Story by Scott Schuster)
Hamilton, N.Y. - A second half surge propelled Navy past Colgate University 3-1 at Van Doren Field, Saturday. Navy's Justin Fishburn scored the game-winning goal handing Colgate its fourth loss in five games.
Defensive mishaps in the second half gave Navy its three scoring marks all within the final twenty-two minutes of play. Fishburn took advantage of a bad clear by Colgate's defense, trapped the ball and rifled a shot past Colgate keeper Jon Brunell from 24 yards out giving Navy a 2-1 lead with twelve minutes remaining.
Navy (8-1-2 overall, 2-1-1 Patriot League) tied the game in the 69th minute when midfielder Matt Sanchez was awarded the goal after his cross deflected off a Colgate defender and rolled into the net.
The Midshipmen would later get an insurance goal in the 84th minute when forward Brye Gerhardt capitalized on another failed Colgate defensive clear chipping in a shot into the top right corner of the net past the hands of an oncoming Colgate keeper Will Martin. Martin had entered the game less than a minute before Gerhardt's goal. Navy keeper Brian Steckroth, who punted the ball almost the full length of the field, was credited with the assist to Gerhardt's goal.
Colgate's Reed Grimes scored the Raiders (3-8 overall, 1-3 Patriot League) lone goal of the game on a one-timer off of a Tim Gerges corner kick.
Steckroth had four saves for Navy, while Colgate's Brunell stopped seven shots and allowed two goals, and Martin had no saves while allowing one goal.
Colgate is slated for a non-league match-up at Philadelphia University Wedneday, October 17 at 3:30 p.m. |
