Lehigh Downs Colgate, 2-0

September 29, 2001

(Story By Scott Schuster)

BETHLEHEM, PA – On a cool, cloudy afternoon, the Colgate Raiders fell to the Mountain Hawks of Lehigh, 2-0, in a Patriot League match-up at Lehigh’s Ulrich Field. A first-half goal by Lehigh forward Doug Cusick would be the only goal the Mountain Hawks (5-2 overall, 1-1 Patriot League) would need to down the rival Raiders.

Cusick opened the scoring in the 27th minute on a chipped ball that sailed into the top of the net from 25 yards out. Cusick, on a two-on-one, received a cross from fellow forward Evan Bruno after Lehigh co-captain midfielder Dan Perciballi, given the secondary assist on the score, started the play with a long pass to an open Bruno.

The Cusick-Bruno combination proved deadly once again, this time in the final minute of play. Bruno added a goal of his own when he beat isolated Colgate keeper Jon Brunell on a breakaway after a long ball from Cusick. The goal, however, proved pointless, as Cusick’s goal would be the only one needed.

The Raiders (2-5 overall, 1-1 Patriot League) put out a solid effort but mistakes cost them quality scoring chances, thereby not capitalizing on several offensive opportunities.

In the 66th minute, Raider midfielder Brian McDermott just missed a goal when he deflected a shot by defenseman Marc Hubbard that rolled over the crossbar and over the outstretched hands of Lehigh keeper Ryan Grzeszczak.

Colgate tried to take advantage of a strong offensive push in the final minutes of the first half, but two shots by Colgate forward Peter Bourquin, one by midfielder Mark Biron, and one by stopper Kevin Meehan could not find the back of the net.

Cusick almost netted his second of the game in the 53rd minute of play when he blasted a shot that Brunell was able to just get a piece of. The ball deflected of the left post and Brunell was able to recover.

In first half action, Brunell warded off Bruno to break up a potential Lehigh scoring opportunity ten minutes into the first half.

Lehigh missed a second good opportunity several minutes later when Brunell was caught out of the net after he challenged Perciballi on a ball entering the penalty box. Colgate co-captain Colyer Curtis managed to clear the ball before Bruno could punch it in the net.

Brunell notched seven saves on the afternoon and his counterpart Grzeszczak recorded two.  Colgate managed only seven shots total to Lehigh's 14.

The Raiders continue action this Wednesday, October 3, at 7 p.m. against Canisius at Van Doren Field, and will continue their Patriot League schedule next Saturday against Holy Cross.
