Colgate and Lafayette Battle to 1-1 Draw
in Patriot League Men's Soccer Action. Contact: Christina Cracolici Phone: (315) 228-6761 (Story By Scott Schuster)
Easton, Pa. - In a rough, hard fought game, the Colgate University men’s soccer team tied the Leopards of Lafayette 1-1 in double overtime. The draw was the first for the Raiders this season. Colgate (4-10-1 overall, 1-3-1 Patriot League) sweeper Marc Hubbard opened the scoring giving the Raiders the early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute of play. Hubbard was the beneficiary of an own-goal by a Lafayette defender when his shot was deflected in past Lafayette keeper Jay Freedman. Lafayette (7-4-4, 1-3-2) forward Jamie Mullarkey notched the equalizer for the Leopards seven minutes later, causing an eventual 1-1 tie between the Leopards and Raiders. Mullarkey was the third Lafayette player to touch the ball off a Lafayette corner kick. Lafayette midfielders Matt Battiste an Keith Evans were given the assists on the play. Although the game ended with only two goals, it was hardly void of quality chances. In the final minutes of the first half, Lafayette forward and leading scorer Paulo Coelho could not handle a long cross from Mullarkey as the ball sailed out of bounds. Later in the first overtime, Battiste kicked a ball right at Colgate goalie Will Martin on another potential game-winning play. Colgate could not capitalize on its opportunities either. In the first overtime period, Raider forward Zach Stuppy raced down the right sideline and managed to draw Freeman out of the net, but his shot was deflected past the right post by a Lafayette defender. Stuppy was robbed in a second opportunity when fellow forward Jon Cook maneuvered around the Lafayette defense, chipped a ball to Stuppy, who then headed it into the hands of a jumping Freedman. The Raiders and Leopards each committed 30 plus fouls in the 120 minutes of play, in a rough, hard-nosed match. Four Colgate players were assessed yellow cards to Lafayette’s one. Both Martin and Freeman were solid in net facing eight shots each, and making three and six saves respectively. The Raiders continue action this week on Tuesday at 5 p.m. against Sacred Heart. The game was originally canceled due to the terrorist attacks on September 11th. |
