Raiders Fall to Rival Cornell, 1-0

September 8, 2001

(Story By Scott Schuster)

Ithaca, N.Y.- On a surprisingly hot and humid day in Central New York, the Colgate Raiders fell to the Big Red of Cornell, in a grueling 1-0 defeat.  Cornell, which opened its season in front of a rowdy and capacity-filled crowd, handed the Raiders their third consecutive loss and second in a row by one goal.

Although Cornell (1-0) could only muster one goal, it was the only goal they would need.  The game's only mark came when Cornell senior forward Ted Papadopoulos slid the ball past an approaching Colgate keepr Jon Brunell in the 51st minute of play.  Papadopoulos received a perfectly placed through ball from sophomore forward Doug Charton, allowing him to score the would-be game-winner.

Allan finished with six saves on the night securing the shutout, while his Colgate counterpart Brunell made four saves.

Colgate's second half saw several balls sail wide of the net, specifically, one off the foot of co-captain Tim Gerges and the other by junior Marc Hubbard.

Similarly to the second half, Colgate (1-3) found few offensive openings in the first half of play.  The best two chances of the half came within the final minutes before halftime when sophomore midfielder Jon Gelman chipped a ball from 30 yards out that just sailed over the crossbar and the outstretched hands of Cornell's Allan.    Minutes later, junior Sean Nevison's direct kick barely missed on a connection with Hubbard, who came within inches of heading the ball into the top right corner of the goal.

Colgate's class of first year's all saw significant minutes and played particularly well.  Coach Mike Doherty started three of the impressive freshmen, namely, Kevin Meehan, Jonathan Cook, and Reed Grimes, who especially, was extra aggressive and attacked the ball on every play.

Colgate will take on Sacred Heart, Wednesday, September 12th at 7 p.m. in its home-opener at Van Doren Field.
