Washington, D.C. - The Eagles of American University used a second half goal from freshman Andrew Herman to defeat Colgate, 1-0, in the final Patriot League game for both teams on American’s Reeves Field. Herman scored the game’s lone goal when he squeezed by the Colgate defense after receiving a pass from teammate Andrew Rosen, and flicked the ball past Colgate keeper Jon Brunell in the 56th minute of play. Rosen was credited with an assist on the goal. The Raiders took six shots in the last two minutes in a final attempt to tie up the game, but five of them were blocked and one sailed high as Colgate could not find the net. American (10-7-1 overall, 6-1-0 Patriot League) controlled the ball for much of the game, and put significant pressure on Brunell and the Colgate defense. Late in the second half, Eagle forward John Fico just missed an insurance goal when Herman raced down the left side, passed across the field to Fico, who then pushed it wide past the left post. In the first half, Shawn Kuykendall blasted a shot from ten yards out right at Brunell. Later, Herman continued his pass distribution, when he crossed the ball to junior midfielder Kris Bertsch, who sent it wide right on the header. Colgate (6-11-1 overall, 2-4-1 Patriot League) was not without quality chances either. In the 22nd minute, forward Peter Bourquin took the ball down the left side of the field and passed to a wide-open Zach Stuppy who shot it right at American keeper Thomas Myers. Sophomore Jimmy Ventriglia raced into the middle of the penalty box and connected on midfielder Tim Gerges’ high cross, but the ball missed the top left corner by only a foot. Later in the second half, Stuppy again had a chance to tie up the game when his shot was headed into the top right corner of American’s net, but Myers made a leaping save to rob Stuppy and the Raiders. American’s aggressive offense and Colgate’s pushed-up defensive play contributed to twelve offside calls against the Eagles. Colgate was called for one offside penalty. Brunell recorded six saves while his American counterpart Myers, recorded two and the shutout. American concluded its regular season schedule with the win and moves on to the Patriot League tournament where the Eagles will hold the No. 1 seed. Colgate takes a trip down Route 12 to take on the Binghamton Bearcats this Wednesday, November 14, in its final game of the season. |
