LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The
Colgate men's soccer team fell 3-2 against Northeastern in the
second game of the Rider tournament Sunday.
Colgate ran into the tournament
offensive MVP Petter Starnas of Northeastern who recorded the
game-winning goal at 75:27 and teammate Jochen Saier who
was named defensive MVP.
Making matters even worse for
the Red Raiders is the fact that they were devastated by
injuries in the preseason and remain shorthanded without
several key players.
Northeastern jumped out to a
1-0 lead just 3:46 into the game on a goal by Ben Collins, but
Colgate scored just two minutes later on a penalty kick by
Josh Viel.
Following Viel's marker, Brendan Skonieczki registered his
second goal of the season off a feed from Conor Harrison to
take a 2-1 lead into the intermission.
Northeastern's Blair Carroll scored from
35 yards out to tie the game and then Starnas took a pass from
Collins for the game-winner.
Northeastern outshot Colgate
22-8, with Colgate goalkeeper Mike Cleveland making his first
career collegiate appearance recording 10 saves, while
Northeastern goalie Allan Lewis made four saves.
The Red Raiders travel to Annapolis, Md.
on Wednesday, September 6 to open the Patriot League season
against Navy at 7 p.m.
