Hamilton, N.Y. - The Colgate University men’s soccer team fell 3-1 to its arch rival, Cornell University, at Van Doren Field Tuesday evening.

Colgate played evenly with Cornell for three-quarters of the game, but Cornell was able to score two big goals in the final twenty minutes of play giving the Big Red the victory.

After a closely contested first half, the two squads entered the locker rooms knotted at 1-1. Big Red forward Richard Stimpson struck first in the 19th minute and gave Cornell the early 1-0 lead as he chipped the ball over the Colgate defense, dribbled down the penalty box and shot past Colgate goalie Will Martin. This was only the second start of Martin’s freshman season.

Colgate scored the equalizer at 22:28 when senior midfielder Conor Harrison gave a long through ball to freshman Brian McDermott, who slid the ball past Cornell goalie Doug Allan for his first collegiate goal. Unfortunately, this was the only offense Colgate displayed on the evening, as the second half was a completely different story.

“I thought in the first half we played very well. I thought we had some great opportunities to score and we didn’t,” Colgate head coach Mike Doherty said. “You leave an opening for a good team like Cornell and they will take advantage of it.”

Cornell saw that opening late into the second half when Cornell forward Adam Skumawitz scored in the 71st minute of play. David Briefel fed a nice cross through the penalty box which Skumawitz deflected past Martin to take a 2-1 lead.

Skumawitz gave Cornell breathing room with his second marker of the game increasing the lead to 3-1 at 74:30. Skumawitz’s first score, however, proved to be enough, as Colgate could not muster sufficient offense against the Big Red.

Senior Josh Viel, second on the team in goals and points, did not play due to a knee injury and could be out 7-10 days.

The Red Raiders will return to the Patriot League slate this Saturday when they take on Lehigh University at Van Doren Field at 7 p.m.
