COLGATE
MEN'S SOCCER WINS THIRD
STRAIGHT AGAINST SYRACUSE 3-2 IN OT
October 25, 2000
Hamilton, N.Y. -
Colgate University midfielder Michael Henes scored the
game-winning goal in overtime to lead the Red Raider men's
soccer team to a 3-2 win over Syracuse University Wednesday
night at Van Doren Field.
With a penchant for
overtime games, Colgate (6-9-1) played in its third
consecutive overtime game and won its second straight.
Henes' goal, coming in
the eleventh minute of the extra session, came on a pass from
Conor Harrison who dribbled up the left side of the field.
Harrison crossed it to Henes, who then dribbled right and
blasted a shot from 35 yards out. The Red Raiders remain
unbeaten against Syracuse (8-6-2) in their last four meetings,
and Colgate has earned three successive wins against its local
rival.
Dominated by aggressive
play, the teams ended regulation knotted at 2-2 tie as the two
teams mirrored the others' moves. Forward Brendan Skonieczki
gave Colgate the early 1-0 lead as he lifted Matt Renner's
pass over Orangemen keeper Kevin Bacher. Within a minute and
14 seconds, Syracuse answered when Kirk Johnson scored on an
open goal. Johnson's goal came when Colgate goalie Jon Brunell
was forced out of the net after he saved two big shots on a
Ryan Hall breakaway.
Brunell made some strong
saves in the first half recording nine including three shots
from close range. Brunell's highlights included a diving save
on a shot from inside the goalie box, a deflection over the
net and a save on a straight blast from five feet away. He was
forced to sit out the second half with a sore ankle, and was
replaced by fellow freshman keeper, Will Martin.
Martin seemed equally
impressive earning his first collegiate win, while registering
four saves. He preserved the tie when smothering Syracuse
midfielder John Andrade's point-blank shot.
The Red Raiders scored
their second goal when Tim Gerges blasted a shot from outside
the penalty box off a feed from Skonieczki. Freshman Brian
McDermott dribbled down the right sideline crossed to
Skonieczki, who then touched it to Gerges for the goal.
Once again Syracuse
followed with the equalizer, this time just 19 seconds later,
when Johnson notched his second of the game on a header over
the outstretched arms of Martin.
Both Brunell and
defender Josh Viel, who sat out the last five minutes of
regulation and overtime with a sore knee, are expected to
return to the lineup against Lafayette this weekend.
