COLGATE
DEFEATS ONEONTA 1-0 IN DOUBLE OVERTIME
October 21, 2000
ONEONTA, N.Y. -
After two deadlocked halves and an extra overtime period, the
Colgate University men's soccer team defeated Oneonta State
1-0 in double overtime at Wright National Soccer Campus.
Josh Viel, Colgate's direct kick specialist, gave Colgate
(5-9-1) the dramatic win with his eighth goal of the season on
a direct kick from twenty yards out at 116:07.
In addition to having
the game winner, Viel proved to be the game saver.
Oneonta stormed toward Colgate's goal with a three-on-one
breakaway three minutes into the first overtime period, when
Viel broke up Oneonta forward Joma Burton's attempt at the
shot and consequently, Oneonta chance at the win.
Unlike the final minute
of play, the game proved to be a defensive battle throughout
the 117 minutes of play. The Red Dragons (9-5-1) created
several scoring chances in the first half, but the solid play
of Colgate goalkeeper Jon Brunell along with Colgate's
defensive unit managed to keep the Oneonta forwards in
check. Brunell, with three saves in the first half,
added a highlight reel save with a sliding save from point
blank range on Oneonta forward Ryan Rummery, keeping the match
scoreless.
Colgate missed several
scoring opportunities in the first half including Brian
McDermott's shot on a cross from Brendan Skonieczki that just
missed the top left corner of the net.
Both teams had a chance
to take a lead midway through the second half, but were unable
to capitalize. Rummery serviced the ball to Burton,
which sailed high of the intended mark, while Colgate
midfielder Michael Henes, tapped Jon Gelman's cross a foot
wide of the right post. Colgate's offensive frustrations
continued in the first overtime when Conor Harrison missed an
open goal, after a pass from Skonieczki drew Oneonta
goalkeeper James Riley out of position.
Colgate played the game
without starters Tim Gerges and Sean Nevison. Both
players were forced to sit out the contest because Gerges had
accumulated five yellow cards this season and Nevison for
receiving a red card at the end of the Adelphi game last week.
The Red Raiders look to
carry their victory over Oneonta into a winning streak as they
host local rival Syracuse this Wednesday, October 25th at 7
p.m.
