Garden City, N.Y. – Adelphi
University’s Marcin Pachowicz scored a hat-trick including
the game-winning goal on a penalty-kick in the second overtime
period to lift the No. 21-ranked Panthers to a 3-2 victory against Colgate
University in men’s soccer action Saturday afternoon at
Stiles Field.
Pachowicz gave Adelphi the dramatic
victory after the Panthers were awarded the penalty-kick when
Andreas Salamonssen’s shot from 15 yards out deflected off
the hand of Colgate co-captain Brendan Skonieczki inside the
penalty box.
Pachowicz scored two second-half goals on
direct kicks giving the Panthers (7-4-0) the lead midway
through the second half.
Pachowicz tallied his first marker when he capitalized
on Colgate defender Marc Hubbard’s foul just outside the
penalty box, beating diving Colgate goalie Will Martin in the
54th minute.
Martin came in for first-half goalie Jon
Brunell, and made several huge saves prolonging the match.
Brunell, who recorded two saves in the first half and
kept Adelphi scoreless, sat out the rest of the game due to
illness.
Eight minutes later, Pachowicz and
Adelphi found themselves on the receiving end of a generous
call from the officials as Pachowicz’s second direct kick
was ruled a goal after it struck the cross bar and managed to
land directly on the goal line giving Adelphi the 2-1 lead.
Assistant referee Alan Hyatt made the call on the
controversial goal.
Colgate forward Cory Rosenthal, a native
Long Islander from Oceanside, N.Y., returned home and
delivered by forcing overtime with his goal in the final
minute of play. Rosenthal
took advantage of an Adelphi defensive lapse, chipping the
ball into the top left corner of the goal over Adelphi goalie
Dario Stawski who came out too far to challenge the ball.
Colgate (4-9-1) took the early lead at
22:03 on a goal by senior midfielder Conor Harrison.
Harrison beat Adelphi goalie Dario Stawski with a low
shot to the left corner of the net as he received a touch pass
from Skonieczki.
Skonieczki, who recorded assists on both
Colgate goals, became Colgate’s all-time leader in assists
with 16.
The officials had their hands full
issuing eight yellow cards, five for Colgate and three for
Adelphi, as well as a red card to Colgate midfielder Sean
Nevison. Both
Nevison and Colgate defender Tim Gerges, who accumulated five
yellow cards on the season, will be forced to sit out
Colgate’s next game.
The Red Raiders continue their
non-conference schedule against Oneonta State next Saturday,
October 21st at 2 p.m.
