May 1, 2001

Hamilton, N.Y. - The Harvard University men's lacrosse team used a five-goal third quarter to record a 13-10 non-conference victory against Colgate University Tuesday night.

Doug Logigan (Huntington, N.Y.) scored three of his four goals on the night in the first half to keep the Crimson (7-7) within striking distance in the first half trailing 7-6 at the intermission. Colgate (3-10) built the halftime lead behind three goals from David Dobbins (Webster N.Y.). The Red Raiders, who completed the 2001 season with the loss, scored four of the last five goals to close out the second quarter.

Harvard's third quarter offensive surge was too much for Colgate to overcome as the Crimson opened the quarter with a 4-0 run on goals by Michael Baly (Westfield, N.J.), Matt Primm (Westminster, Md.), Dana Sprong (Fayetteville, N.Y.) and James Christian (Chester, N.J.) to take a 10-7 lead. Colgate's Obie Bate (Essex Fells, N.J.) cut the lead to 10-8 with a man-up goal. After giving Colgate its extra-man opportunity with a slashing penalty, Harvard's Jeff Gottschall (Swampscott, Mass.) made up for his mistake countering with his man-up goal at 3:18 to give the Crimson an 11-8 advantage after three quarters.

Colgate made an early run in the fourth quarter cutting the lead to 11-10 with 11:58 remaining on goals by Dobbins (his fourth of the game) and Danny Grady (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), but Harvard locked up their defensive zone and goalie Ely Kahn (Cohasset, Mass.) preserved the lead with four saves in the quarter.
