COLGATE HITTING BEST STRIDE IN THE CLOSING WEEKS OF THE SEASON WITH 13-10 VICTORY AT LEHIGH FOR ITS SECOND WIN IN THE LAST THREE PATRIOT LEAGUE GAMES

April 21, 2001

Bethlehem, Pa. -- The Colgate University men's lacrosse team recorded its second win of the season behind a three goals and an assist from Obie Bate (Essex Fells, N.J.) including two in the fourth quarter to propel the Red Raiders to a 13-10 victory against Lehigh.

Colgate (2-9, 2-4 PL) ended its Patriot League schedule in fine fashion winning two of its final three games and improved their series lead against the Mountain Hawks to 19-9.

The Red Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter with unassisted markers from David Dobbins (Webster, N.Y.) and Nick Gerken (Wilton, Conn.). Colgate held the advantage for almost the entire first quarter, but Anthony Lowe (Setauket, N.Y.) and Christian Castellani (New Canann, Conn.) scored goals just 19 seconds apart at 2:09 and 1:50, respectively to tie the game at 2-2 at the end of the first.

It was the first of eight ties on the afternoon, however, Lehigh (3-9, 1-3 PL) didn't lose the lead until late in the third when Eamon DePeter (Nyack, N.Y.) scored with just 22 ticks left on the clock from Bate.

Lehigh looked as they had gained the upper hand in the fourth quarter when Grant Wasch (Earlysville, Va.) tied the game at 8-8 with 13:35 left in the game and then Castellani connected for his third goal of the day just over a minute later to retake the lead 9-8. However, the Red Raiders wouldn't concede as Bate scored his first of two in the fourth from Ian Franke (Duxbury, Mass.) at 11:52 and then 47 seconds later, Danny Grady (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) scored his second marker of the game. Colgate goalie Chris Hettler settled a groundball and then lead a great breakout on the clear finding a streaking Grady wide-open and he carried it into the box one-on-one with the goalie. Hettler finished with 13 saves including five saves (three which preserved the lead) in the fourth quarter.

Lehigh's Brandon Wenk (Garden City, N.Y.) tied the game for the eighth time of the game and the two squads played even for nearly the next five minutes before Colgate gained the momentum for good. Nick Gerken scored the eventual game-winning goal at 2:03 and then Dobbins iced the game with a great diving shot just outside the crease off a great feed from Grady at 1:06. Then Bate closed out the game with a man-up situation after a Lehigh penalty and an empty-net. Bate came from behind the net and went one-on-one with the defender and stuffed the no angle shot from the right side of the next with five seconds left in the contest.

Colgate remains on the road at Albany next Saturday, April 28 at 3 p.m. and closes out the season at Tyler's Field against Harvard on May 1 at 7 p.m.
