April 4, 2001

HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Jamie Breslin (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) scored five goals including three in the fourth quarter to lead the No. 17 Hobart men's lacrosse team to an 11-6 victory against Colgate University in Patriot League men's lacrosse action Wednesday night.

The win was Hobart's 19th straight victory against Colgate dating back to 1965. It did mark the closest Colgate has come to the Statesment since 1997 when the Red Raiders lost 15-10 in Hamilton. Colgate lost last year's meeting with Hobart, 20-5 in Geneva.

The Statesmen (4-1, 4-1 in the Patriot League) rebounded from their first loss of the season to No. 9 Bucknell last Saturday, but not after being challenged by Colgate through three frames. The Red Raiders who have yet to record a win this season gave Hobart all it could handle in the first half tied at 2-2 after the first stanza and then trailed just 4-2 at the half.

Breslin scored two of his five goals on the night in the first half and Adam Neary (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and John Bogosian added goals for Hobart in the first half. Senior tri-captain Danny Grady (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and senior middie David Dobbins (Webster, N.Y.) netted Colgate's markers.

Colgate (0-8, 0-3 in PL) cut the lead to 4-3 to open the second half when Ian Franke (Duxbury, Mass.) connected at 8:22. David Spratlen (Littleton, Colo.) rebuilt the two-goal cushion at 3:50 and then Bogosian gave the Statesmen their largest lead of the game at 6-3 with 1:56 left in the third. Spratlen finished the game with five points on two goals and three helpers.

The Red Raiders weren't through as they mounted a comeback charge in the fourth closing the gap to one goal once again when Grady netted his second of the game on the man-advantage at 12:46 with a top corner no angle shot short side. Then eight seconds later freshman Daniel Hatton (Corning, N.Y.) made it 6-5. Colgate had the ball and got a shot on goal in their next possession, but couldn't capitalize.

Breslin and Spratlin were the go ahead leaders rebuilding a three-goal lead with markers at 11:05 and 7:33 of the fourth. Following Grady's third goal of the game, Hobart scored the last three goals of the game with two from Breslin and a goal by Scott Harvey (Suffern, N.Y.).

Hobart travels to Penn State next on Saturday, April 7 at 2 p.m., while the Red Raiders which are off to the worst start in their history with eight losses will look to snap their 10-game losing skid dating back to last year when they travel to Holy Cross also on Saturday at 11 a.m.
