NO. 14 CORNELL EXPLODES FOR 10 GOALS IN THE FIRST
TO RECORD 18-7 VICTORY AGAINST COLGATE

March 7, 2001

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The No.14 Cornell University men's lacrosse team exploded for 10 first quarter goals led by a hat-trick from Scott Lee and two goals apiece from Drew Schardt and Chris Morea to lead the Big Red to an 18-7 victory against Colgate Wednesday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field.

The game was moved from its originally March 6th scheduled date, due to the recent snowfall.

The win was Cornell's fourth straight against Colgate. The Big Red took last year's meeting 12-8 in Hamilton, posted an identical 12-8 win in Ithaca in 1999 and started the streak in 1998 with a 16-5 decision.

Cornell's David Key started the first quarter scoring onslaught finding the net 33 seconds into the contest and then Schardt added his first of four on the day at 1:52. Morea added two in the first at 2:44 and 6:17 for the Big Red now 2-0 on the year. Scott Lee scored three of his four markers in the game at 10:27 and then back-to-back goals at 11:36 and 12:27 of the first. Lee added three assists to finish the game with seven points.

Cornell chased starting goalkeeper Chris Hettler who played just over 21 minutes of action allowing nine goals and recorded one save, while freshmen Jonathan Pico and Brendan Spellman saw their first action of the year. Pico surrendered seven goals and recorded two saves in 24 minutes and Spellman played the fourth allowing two goals.

Nick Gerken scored the first of his three goals in the contest to get the Red Raiders (0-3) on the board 32 seconds into the second. The second was more evenly played with each team registering two goals apiece.

The almost insurmountable lead was too much for Colgate to overcome, but the Red Raiders did continue to battle and took the fourth quarter 4-2 with two goals by Gerken, Parker Gibson's second of the game and a marker by Obie Bate.

Cornell junior All-America goalkeeper Justin Cynar played 52:45 allowing four goals and recording nine saves, while Adam Buttermore played the final 7:15 allowing three goals and stopping one shot on goal.

Cornell travels to No. 11 Maryland-Baltimore County next on Mar. 10 at 2 p.m., while the Red Raiders are off until Tuesday, March 13 when they play the first of two games over spring break in Boca Raton, Fla. vs. Yale at 1 p.m. and close out the trip against Vermont on Saturday, March 17 at 7 p.m.
