DOWNS COLGATE IN MEN'S LACROSSE SEASON OPENER

SYRACUSE, NY -- After Colgate scored the game’s
first goal at 13:02 of the first quarter, Syracuse answered by
scoring the next seven goals of the
first half for a 7-1 halftime advantage. The Orangemen (1-0)
went on to a 12-5 victory at the Carrier
Dome in the first game of the 2001 season
for both teams.
It marked the 10th-straight home-opening victory for the
Orangemen, who are 120-11 in the Carrier
Dome all-time.
Junior midfielder Brian Solliday (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) had
two goals during the first-half run.
Syracuse got solid contribution from its starting attack.
Junior Josh Coffman (Carthage,
NY/Carthage) tallied a game-high three goals, two of which
came in the second half.
Sophomore Michael Springer (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood)
had two goals and two assists and freshman Michael Powell
(Carthage, NY/Carthage) posted one goal and a
game-high three assists in his
collegiate debut.
Senior midfielder Jason Januszkiewicz (Orchard Park,
NY/Orchard Park) scored a career-high
two goals to aid SU’s cause. Freshman attackman Brian
Nee (Cockeysville, MD/Boys’ Latin) also registered two
goals.
Junior attackman Liam Banks (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville)
played valuable minutes and assisted two
SU goals.
Senior goalie Rob Mulligan (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale)
played all 60 minutes and finished with
12 saves. Colgate keeper Chris Hettler, a junior
from Liverpool, NY, played the entire game and totalled 13
saves for the Red Raiders.
Senior attackman Danny Grady (Baldwinsville, NY) was
Colgate’s top
scorer with three points (two goals, one assist).
The Orangemen, picked No. 1 in three preseason polls, will
play host to
No. 3-ranked Virginia on Saturday, March 3 at 2:30 p.m. It
will be the
second game of a doubleheader with the schools’ two women’s
teams
battling each other beginning at noon.
